The Nurse Preceptor Incentive Grants Program was a grant for Vermont’s Critical Access Hospitals and other health care employers administered by the Agency of Human Services per Act 183 of 2022 and Act 3 of 2023. The intent of the Program is to increase compensation for nurses who provide student preceptor supervision in Vermont’s Critical Access Hospitals and in other Vermont health care settings. To that end, the program has provided grant funds to allow health care employers to distribute incentive pay to eligible employees who provide preceptor supervision for student nurses enrolled in Vermont nursing schools completing clinical training at their organization. Nine grants were awarded through an application process. Awardees must disburse grant funds for preceptor supervision completed between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024. The grant end period was extended to September 30, 2026.
The desired outcomes of the Nurse Preceptor Incentive Grants Program are to:
- Address the state’s long-standing shortage of nursing professionals, a problem that has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 public health crisis,
- Expand the number of nurse preceptors for nursing students in Vermont by:
- Encouraging nurses who already provide preceptor supervision for nursing students to continue providing such supervision,
- Encouraging additional nurses to take on preceptor supervision responsibilities for nursing students.
A total of $2.38 million was distributed through the Program.
